AG Employee Spotlight

During a NAAG Public Information Officer (PIO) seminar Jan Schaefer took the Myers-Briggs personality test and it revealed she was equally introverted and extroverted. That is certainly true regarding her role as the PIO in the Mississippi Office of the Attorney General. She can take the spotlight if need be, but she is more comfortable shining it on others.

In this role, she is often identified as the spokeswoman in news stories but reluctantly takes that title. “I will be the first to tell you that this agency has one spokesperson and that is Attorney General Jim Hood,” said Schaefer.

In addition to handling press requests, she organizes media events, writes news releases, serves as a liaison to divisions in the Attorney’s General Office (AGO) for their public information needs, updates social networking sites and gives an overview of the AGO to schools and community groups.

She enjoys her job and takes great pride in using her skills to showcase the difference her office is making in the lives of Mississippi residents. It also helps that she has a great sense of humor that allows her to juggle her many responsibilities with ease.

“I do everything in my power to let citizens know how hard this office is working for them every day,” said Schaefer. “My days are always busy. Sometimes it's hard to keep up, but I wouldn't have it any other way.”

She spent 12 years working as a news producer for the NBC television affiliate, WLBT, in Jackson and three years as deputy director of public affairs for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety/Mississippi Highway Patrol before joining the Attorney General’s Office in February 2006.

Schaefer is a native Mississippian and completed her undergraduate work in communications at the University of Southern Mississippi and graduated summa cum laude with a master's degree in communications from Mississippi College. She is married and the proud mother of four children.
