AGs Call for Tamper-Resistant Versions of Generic Prescription Pain Relievers

December 16, 2013

Washington, DC –The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) sent a letter today to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting that the agency require tamper-resistant versions of generic prescription pain relievers (opioids) to deter abuse.

Prescription drug abuse is a significant danger, reaching epidemic levels in many states. Opioids relieve pain and codeine, hydrocodone (e.g. Vicodin) and oxycodone (e.g. OxyContin, Percocet) fall into this medication class. According to the FDA, “Abuse-deterrent formulations target the known or expected routes of abuse, such as crushing in order to snort or dissolving in order to inject, for the specific opioid drug substance in that formulation.”

The NAAG letter thanks the FDA for the agency’s recent efforts to ensure branded opioid drugs have abuse-deterrent formulations. “But we must go further,” reads the NAAG letter signed by 42 state and territorial attorneys general. “Ensuring that generic opioids, like their branded counterparts, have abuse-deterrent properties is a commonsense improvement that provides yet another important tool in the fight against our nation’s prescription drug epidemic.”

A copy of the NAAG letter can be found here: http://www.naag.org/sign-on_archive.php.

State and territorial attorneys general have been at the forefront in combating the nation’s prescription drug abuse epidemic, combining evidence-based prevention, sound law enforcement actions, and state-operated prescription drug monitoring programs, to help prevent overdoses.
