Assistant Attorney General II – Homicide Assistance Team

Job Duties: This attorney is part of a specialized team within the Special Prosecution Unit that functions to advise and assist local district attorneys in the investigation and prosecution of current or cold homicide cases, including post-trial and appellate proceedings involving such cases. These cases may qualify for consideration for the death penalty and may result in the death penalty being sought. Frequent travel within the State may be required.

All prosecutions in which the team participates involve extensive research and pre-trial motions work. much of which is performed by the team attorney assigned to the case. The attorney must possess the analytical abilities and writing skills necessary to provide effective support in motions practices. In addition, the attorney must possess strong litigation skills, which enable the attorney to consult and participate in all aspects of the prosecution, including discovery, depositions, hearings and trial. Effective communication with local prosecutors and local law enforcement is essential.

This attorney is expected to participate in the training of prosecutors statewide on issues related to best practices in pending and cold case homicide investigations and prosecutions and to also provide consultative, research and drafting assistance if needed on issues implicating the death penalty.

This attorney is also expected to work with team investigators in their efforts to assist law enforcement agencies and district attorneys throughout the State in further investigating and solving cold homicide cases.. Among other things, this aspect of the position requires a working knowledge of the law of arrest, search and seizure and procedures for acquisition of evidence or determination of identity.

Minimum Job Qualifications: Must be licensed to practice in Colorado courts and have at least 7 years prosecution trial or criminal appellate experience. While prior experience as a prosecutor is required, private practice experience may be considered and, depending upon the nature of such experience, may substitute for a portion of the foregoing 7 year requirement.

Excellent trial, research, writing, and oral communication skills are needed. Experience with death penalty cases is preferred. A writing sample is required.
