Assistant Attorney General
The Department of Justice of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is seeking to fill an Assistant Attorney General position in the Division of Litigation.
The FSM is a developing island nation in the central Pacific, formerly a part of the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The FSM’s legal system is based on the United States model. English is the official language of the FSM. The capital of the FSM is in Palikir, on the island of Pohnpei. The FSM Attorney General’s office is a small office with seven attorneys.
Attorneys in the Division of Litigation are responsible for investigating allegations of violations of national law, determining which cases to prosecute and bringing civil and criminal cases on behalf of the national government, as well as defending any claims brought against the government. Areas of national law which may be the subject of litigation include fisheries, elections, use of public funds and other financial crimes, and contract matters. Attorneys will also perform other duties such as providing counsel to the executive branch and the Office of the President and working on international treaties.
A degree in law and admission to practice law in any jurisdiction and at least five years of litigation experience is required. Experience as a prosecutor or experience in a government litigation practice is preferred. The salary will fall within a range of $38,000 to $39,999 per year (U.S. tax exempt), depending on experience. Additional benefits include a housing allowance, round-trip airfare to and from the FSM, shipment of household goods, and an unforgettable experience. A two-year contract is offered. Positions may require some international travel.
