Pro Bono Legal Education Offerings Renewed for AG Offices

The Practising Law Institute (PLI) has generously renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG). The MOU offers attorneys in state Attorneys General offices the opportunity to take advantage of some of PLI’s extensive legal education offerings on a pro bono basis.

PLI is a non-profit continuing legal education organization chartered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York. Founded in 1933, it has, since that time, offered high-quality, up-to-the minute programs for legal professionals. The offerings include seminars held throughout the United States, webcasts, course handbooks, and web programs covering a variety of legal issues, many of which will be of interest to attorneys practicing in the public sector.

The PLI/NAAG MOU allows registered attorneys from state Attorneys General offices pro bono access to PLI’s On-Demand offerings. These include unlimited access to PLI’s recorded versions of seminars and audio-only web programs. PLI also offers a 10 percent discount off treatises and course handbook series subscriptions, and a 50 percent discount off course handbooks and DVDs for programs not attended with a few minor exceptions.

In order for each office’s attorneys to take advantage of this program, each AG office must submit a list to PLI with the name and bar numbers of every attorney who wishes to take advantage of PLI’s offerings. Each state’s training coordinator has already received information regarding how to sign the office’s attorneys up to receive training from PLI. Eleven states and the NAAG attorneys have taken advantage of this opportunity for training. Those states that have already registered their attorneys with PLI should double-check that the list submitted last fall is up to date -- that attorneys who have left the office have been deleted from the list and new attorneys have been added.

Once an office’s attorneys are properly registered with PLI, individual attorneys can access pro bono training by going to the PLI Web site at www.pli.edu, register, and then click the “CLE Now” button. This will bring up a list of web-based courses that PLI has graciously made available to attorneys in Attorneys General offices.
