Consumers: Be Informed; Avoid Scams And Fraud

Attorneys General Offer Guidance During Consumer Protection Week

Washington, DC--- March 3-9 is the 15th National Consumer Protection Week, and state and territorial attorneys general will once again be a part of a coordinated national education campaign that encourages consumers to take full advantage of their rights and make better-informed decisions. They can learn how to protect themselves from fraud, identity theft, and scams, and determine the best way to use credit, how to shop for a used car, or maximize security online, for example.

“Scammers don’t discriminate. Anyone can be a victim of fraud, identity theft or financial exploitation,” said Douglas F. Gansler, National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) president and Maryland attorney general. “A well-informed consumer is more likely to recognize scams before they do harm and will know how to be a smart and secure shopper.”

Automotive complaints topped NAAG’s 2012 list of consumer complaints with debt collection and home repair and construction in second and third.*

Go to www.ncpw.gov for free educational resources and to read blog posts from national consumer protection experts. Attorneys general offices will also be distributing consumer information and guidance during local events and via their websites and social media.

The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), www.naag.org, was founded in 1907 to help Attorneys General fulfill the responsibilities of their office and to assist in the delivery of high quality legal services to the states and territorial jurisdictions.
