Criminal Law Committee

The NAAG Criminal Law Committee provides support to the nation?s Attorneys General in the exercise of their powers and duties to promote public safety. The Committee serves as the lead for the Association on criminal justice related issues. The 2006-2007 Committee is Co-Chaired by Attorneys General John Suthers of Colorado and Jim Hood of Mississippi.

The mission of the NAAG Criminal Law Committee (?Committee?) is to engage the membership of NAAG in activities that support the powers and duties of Attorneys General as they relate to the enforcement of state criminal statutes, as well as the attendant policy, legislative, and programmatic issues related to state criminal law. Issues of particular concern currently involve methamphetamine; gang violence; prescription drug abuse and diversion, including end-of-life issues with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration; sex offenders and predators; concerns for crime victims; violence against women; cyber crime; and identity theft. The Committee will continue to provide support to the Attorneys General and their staff by monitoring federal legislation and state legislative initiatives that may be of interest to NAAG=s membership; remaining abreast of developments in the field of criminal justice and law enforcement; providing technical assistance to the Attorneys General and their staff on issues related to criminal justice and law enforcement; and regularly updating NAAG's Criminal Law Project backpage on the NAAG website.

Executive Working Group on Prosecutorial Relations (EWG)

The EWG is comprised of six Attorneys General appointed by the NAAG President; six District Attorneys appoint by the National District Attorneys Association; and six U.S. Attorneys representing the U.S. Department of Justice, including the Assistant Attorney General of the Criminal Division. The EWG meets regularly to identify issues of mutual concern and ways in which to improve the working relationship among law enforcement agencies on the state, local and federal levels.
