Employee Spotlight

Philip Hurst, Tobacco Information Coordinator

Philip Hurst, the newest member of the NAAG staff, has been in the office for a short time but has made quite an impression. Since his arrival in August, he consistently brings a good attitude and enthusiasm to every task he completes. As the paralegal for NAAG’s Tobacco Project, he manages the Tobacco Project Wiki, compiles data, assists with depositions and coordinates actions between states.

This is Philip’s first time interacting directly with legal issues but he definitely welcomes the challenge. “I’m getting more insight into the legal world. For instance, tobacco is such a large area of law with so many aspects. I’m learning more about arbitration and depositions,” he said. His time here at NAAG will prove to be useful as he plans to attend law school.

Prior to joining NAAG, Philip worked in the fundraising department of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. His interest in refugee issues began in college with his grant-funded research on Utah’s Muslim refugee population. Philip enjoyed meeting people from around the world and learning pleasantries in Arabic and other languages.

This California native enjoys exploring Washington, D.C., since this is his first time living on the east coast. He also enjoys camping, doing ceramics, and baking. Philip is also an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America.

He majored in international relations and minored in business management at Brigham Young University, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He currently resides in Alexandria, Va., with his wife Elizabeth.
