Gary King is currently the New Mexico Attorney General and the only current AG in the nation who is also a scientist with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry. Dr. King maintained a private practice as an attorney and served as a state Legislator for 12 years before being elected Attorney General in 2006. Since 1987, he has been married to Yolanda Jones King, an internationally noted scientist and local community leader. Gary grew up with his ranching family in Stanley, New Mexico. As Attorney General, Dr. King spearheaded the effort to get legislation passed that, for the first time, made it a felony crime in New Mexico to engage in the practice of human trafficking. Subsequently, he was invited to Geneva, Switzerland by a United Nations committee to present this legislation and a cooperative agreement between himself and the Attorney General of Chihuahua, Mexico as a model for other nations around the world that are seeking to end the practice of human slavery. AG King personally argued the State’s side in Bullcoming v. New Mexico in front of the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. The case involves the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and will have a wide ranging impact on DWI prosecutions across the nation. Attorney General King received the national Humane Law Enforcement Award for his work to combat animal abuse and his formation of the Attorney General's Animal Cruelty Task Force in New Mexico. He also has been recognized with a Zia Award, given to New Mexico residents with a degree from UNM who have distinguished themselves in public office. Protecting New Mexico families remains a high priority now and for the foreseeable future for Gary King.
