NAAG Training Institute Receives Public Health Law Grant

Washington, DC—The National Attorneys General Training and Research Institute (NAGTRI) has been awarded a $149,576 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to provide public health law training to Attorneys General staff. NAGTRI is the research and training arm of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG).

State Attorneys General have used their legal authority to enforce public health statutes and regulations over the years. Among the most well-known is the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement to reduce tobacco use among youth, but Attorneys General are also working in such areas as air and public water supply regulation, public health emergencies, medical privacy, and prescription drug abuse prevention.

“We are very excited to pursue this opportunity with such a prestigious partner as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,” said Chris Toth, NAGTRI director and NAAG deputy executive director. “The area of health law and policy is rapidly becoming of increased importance to Attorneys General, and this collaboration will be of great benefit in facing this new challenge.”

The grant period runs from Aug. 1, 2012 – July 31, 2014. Sixteen public health law attorneys from various Attorneys General offices will attend one of two public health fellowship programs being planned. A Subject Matter Expert committee will convene in Atlanta, Ga., in September to identify specific public health topics for the fellowship programs.
