Media Advisory: State Attorneys General Convene in New York City
The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) Eastern Region is holding a two-day meeting in New York City, Oct. 29-30 to focus on ways to combat the heroin and prescription opioid epidemic. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin serves as chair of the NAAG Eastern Region, which is comprised of 14 states and territories.* New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman will offer opening remarks.

AGs Support Federal Legislation to Combat Epidemic of Heroin Addiction and Prescription Drug Abuse
The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) sent a letter to congressional committee leaders today in support of a federal bill that would give states the necessary tools to more effectively confront the epidemic of heroin addiction and prescription painkiller abuse in communities. More than 100 Americans die as a result of overdose in this country every day—more than half of them caused by prescription drugs or heroin.

The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) Midwestern Region is holding a one and a half day meeting in Chicago, Ill., Oct. 1-2 to focus on ways to combat gender-based violence and discrimination. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan will host. She serves as chair of the NAAG Midwestern Region, which is comprised of 11 states.* Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel is vice-chair.

AGs Zoeller and Miller Welcome Action by Federal Food and Drug Administration
Attorney General Greg Zoeller of Indiana and Attorney General Janet Mills of Maine, Co-Chairs of the Tobacco Committee of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), today applauded the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) August 27 issuance of warning letters to three tobacco manufacturers, informing the manufacturers that they are violating federal law by marketing their cigarettes as “natural” and “additive-free.”

Attorneys General Urge Phone Companies to Offer Technology that Blocks Unwanted Sales Calls or Texts
The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) sent a letter today to the five leading phone companies (AT&T, CenturyLink, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon), urging them to offer call-blocking technology to consumers. Such technology already exists and it would help stop robocalls, scam text messages and unwanted telemarketing calls.

As Congress considers national legislation on data breach notification and data security, it should ensure that states maintain their ability to enforce state laws in order to protect consumers, reads a NAAG letter signed by 47 state and territorial attorneys general and sent to congressional leaders.

Oil Companies Should Eliminate Synthetic Drug Sales from Gas Stations and Convenience Stores
The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) sent a letter today to the CEOs of nine oil companies asking them to help eliminate any synthetic drug sales from retail locations operating under their brand names. Over the past few years, dozens of owners, managers, and employees of branded gas stations and convenience stores have been arrested for selling synthetic drugs.
