Mass Shooting Attacks, Major Hurricanes, Huge Floods, State Calamities:
Attorneys General Begin New, Major Focus on Active Crisis Management

New President of NAAG, Louisiana AG Jeff Landry, Begins Initiative to Prepare Attorneys General across the U.S. for Major Disasters and Mass Incidents

Washington, D.C. --- Managing emergencies and crises like mass shootings, natural disasters, and cyber-attacks will be the new focus of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), announced NAAG President and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry today.

“From warnings to rescues and planning to recoveries, governments are tasked with numerous responsibilities during emergency situations,” Attorney General Landry said. “My goal is to use the next 18 months to gather as much intel and tips as possible so we may better prepare attorneys general and other officials for future crises.”

This NAAG 2018 – 2019 Presidential Initiative will encompass preparations and responses to devastating acts of God and man-made catastrophes. Attorney General Landry’s initiative will allow state and territory AG offices – through exchanging ideas, insights, and experiences – to help better serve their constituents.

“Every attorney general has gone through some crisis or natural disaster in his or her state or territory,” Attorney General Landry added. “It calls on us to lead at the most critical and trying times when our citizens are in their most vulnerable moment.”

Attorney General Landry, who was elected President in June, hopes to conclude his term by publishing the third edition of NAAG’s “Preparing for the Unexpected: A Disaster Preparedness Manual and Resource Guide for AG Offices.

NAAG membership – comprised of the 56 state, territory and District of Columbia attorneys general and their staffs – continue to help Puerto Rico’s Department of Justice in recovering from Hurricane Maria. AG offices also sent victims of crime advocate teams to Las Vegas following the 2017 shooting tragedy; and afterwards, NAAG developed and disseminated a “Responding Mass Violence Incidents” checklist for AG offices.
