Katharine Brooks

Katharine Brooks is the Bureau Chief of the Claims Bureau in the New York State Attorney General’s Office. She received a B.A., summa cum laude, in 1975 from SUNY Albany, and a J.D. in 1978 from Hofstra University School of Law. In her present position, Ms. Brooks is responsible for the oversight of all Claims and Supreme Court cases where monetary damages are sought from the State and its employees venued in New York City and the downstate Region of the State. Ms. Books has tried and negotiated settlements in multi-million dollar cases and affected the dismissal of innumerable cases against the State, serving justice and saving the State millions of dollars. She has held her present position since 2008. Prior to serving as Bureau Chief, Ms. Books was the Deputy Bureau Chief and the Medical Malpractice Section Chief. Prior to entering State service, Ms. Books was in private practice affiliated with both plaintiff and defense law firms. She has presented Continuing Legal Education at the New York City and other Bar Associations and at the Office of the Attorney General. Ms. Books frequently lectures at the State hospitals on the defense of multi-million dollar cases and medico-legal issues.
