New Chief Deputy/Chief of Staff Orientation
NAAG provided a two-day orientation on Feb. 15-17 to newly-appointed chief deputies and chiefs of staff. It was hosted by Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell in New Orleans and moderated by North Carolina General Counsel JB Kelly. Thirty-five chief deputies and chiefs of staff attended, over 15 of whom were newly appointed. The orientation provided a unique opportunity for interaction and networking between the veterans and the freshman class. Experienced chief deputies and chiefs of staff conducted panels ranging from “What I Wish I had Known on My First Day” to “Office Nuts and Bolts” to “Important Relationships with Clients”. Attorney General Caldwell provided opening remarks at the Welcome reception. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller was the featured luncheon speaker and provided his insights on the topic “What an Attorney General Needs from a Chief Deputy and Chief of Staff”. Former Maine Attorney General Jim Tierney provided a summary of the powers and duties of the Attorney General.
The orientation was funded through the NAAG Mission Foundation, at no cost to Attorneys General offices. Veteran chief deputies and chiefs of staff point to their orientation meeting as the single most valuable experience they had in beginning a successful tenure.
