Protect Your Child from Internet Predators

  • Parents shouldn’t be afraid to parent. You’re not your child’s pal, you’re their guardian and protector.
  • Take an active role and explore the Internet with your children.
  • Place a computer in a common area.
  • Set Internet rules (when, why and with whom present) and let your children know that using the Internet for personal reasons is a privilege, not a right.
  • Monitor their online activity and use an online filter and other parental control tools.
  • Know who your children talking to. Access your child’s e-mail.
  • Tell your children not to give out any personal information online or post photos
  • Control chat rooms, online profiles and instant messaging. Encourage your children to post messages only with your permission and supervision.
  • Think about why you’re giving a phone to your kids… is it so they can call and check in. If so, then don’t give them a camera, text messaging and access to the Internet.
  • Take your child’s phone and look through it, see who they’re sending messages to and read them.
  • Report wrongdoers.
