The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking applicants for an Assistant Attorney General in its Contract Litigation Unit within the Civil Litigation Division.
Responsibilities
The position is responsible for litigating disputes, often factually and legally complex, arising out of the formation and administration of State construction and service contracts, and for providing advice on contract issues to a variety of State agencies. The cases handled by this Unit require a demonstrated ability to respond to and propound written discovery, conduct and/or defend depositions, draft and respond to motions, and present arguments before an administrative board and Maryland’s circuit and appellate courts. An ability to recognize settlement possibilities is helpful. The position offers the opportunity to handle significant civil litigation in a collaborative working environment.
Qualifications
The ideal candidates will have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible litigation experience, Maryland Bar membership or the ability to immediately waive in, first chair deposition experience with fact and expert witnesses, and at least second chair trial experience, as well as strong analytical, writing and advocacy skills. Candidates must have a proven ability to handle multiple, high-stakes cases simultaneously, manage client expectations, and develop and implement legal strategies that lead to favorable outcomes. An interest in construction law is highly preferred. Knowledge of e-discovery platforms, particularly as they relate to managing large volumes of data and documents in complex litigation, will be an asset.
