The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

Responsibilities

The OAG is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Attorney General in the Courts and Judicial Affairs Division. The Assistant Attorney General will primarily handle substantial litigation at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal court and will provide advice and support to all levels of the Judiciary primarily working with the Administrative Office of the Courts, county administrative judges, and court administrators. The duties will include all aspects of defense litigation, including independently handling cases, taking and defending depositions, written discovery, drafting briefs, and appearing in court for motions, hearings, and trials. The position is an extensive motions practice position often involving complex litigation.

The Court and Judicial Affairs Division generally provides legal services including representation and advice to the entire Judicial Branch of State government and two executive agencies: the Maryland Tax Court and the Office of Administrative Hearings. Courts and related entities within the Judicial Branch employ several thousand employees. Attorneys for the Division represent in litigation and give advice to these employees in addition to all state judges and their respective courts, as well as court supporting agencies including the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Registers of Wills, and the Orphans’ Courts and judges, and their respective staff. This position may generally provide advice and representation to the Division’s other clients, as needed.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years’ experience, membership and experience in the Maryland Bar and the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and superior writing and research skills. Civil litigation experience is required. Employment litigation experience (including experience investigating MCCR and EEOC charges and drafting related position statements) in addition to torts and/or civil rights litigation experience is highly desirable. Appellate and trial experience (bench and/or jury) is preferred but is not required.
