Job Title: Assistant Attorney General VI Position Type: Regular Full-Time

Salary: $95,991 – $154,928. The salary range is based on a multitude of factors including applicable personnel rules, regulations, and guidelines.

DESCRIPTION: The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

Responsibilities

The Office of the Attorney General, Maryland Department of Health (MDH), is seeking applicants to serve as an Assistant Attorney General. The MDH is a large and dynamic agency with a $19 billion budget in fiscal year 2025. MDH’s mission is to promote and improve the health and safety of all Marylanders through disease prevention, access to care, quality management, and community engagement.
The Assistant Attorney General represents the Public Health Services (PHS) Administration within MDH. PHS oversees vital public health services to Maryland residents, including infectious disease control and prevention, environmental health, maternal, child, and family health, food safety, health care quality, and vital records, as well as the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, State Anatomy Board, and activities of the 24 local health departments in the state. The Assistant Attorney General will advise and counsel the various units within the PHS to facilitate the PHS’s mission to safeguard and promote the health of all Marylanders including but not limited to the Laboratories Administration, Office of Preparedness and Response, Office of Population Health Improvement, Office of Controlled Substance Administration, and the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration. The Assistant Attorney General is part of a team of three attorneys and a supervising attorney devoted to representation of the PHS. The Assistant Attorney General will work closely with the other attorneys representing the PHS and collaborate with the larger MDH legal team within the Office of the Attorney General
The position’s responsibilities will include advice, litigation, and transactional matters, all involving issues including Public Information Act responses, contracts, drafting orders, contracts and agreements, human resources issues, and compliance issues related to public health, and other legal matters and responsibilities as assigned. The AAG will represent the client in litigation before the Office of Administrative Hearings and State courts, for both defense and enforcement actions.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience, excellent research and writing skills, experience with administrative litigation, contract review, advising clients regarding the drafting of key policies and regulation and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with clients and external stakeholders is essential. Current admission to the Maryland Bar is required. A background in health law, a passion for public health, and experience representing a regulatory agency is helpful.
