The Oil and Gas Section has three primary agency clients: the Alaska Department of Natural Resourcesthe Alaska Department of Revenue, and the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. The attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants in the Oil and Gas Section work with state client agencies to ensure that the State’s vast oil, gas, and geothermal resources are responsibly managed and revenues from royalties and taxes received.

Attorneys in the Civil Division work on matters of statewide importance, all while living and enjoying all Alaska has to offer. If you enjoy complex and impactful legal work along with dramatic scenery, outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, kayaking, and abundant wildlife, then the Alaska Department of Law, Civil Division is the place for you. Flexible schedules, including hybrid telework arrangements, may be available.

Responsibilities

The attorney selected for this position will advise the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Revenue. Oil & Gas Section attorneys represent State of Alaska client agencies to ensure that Alaska’s vast oil, gas, geothermal, and subsurface energy interests are responsibly managed and revenues from royalties and taxes received. The legal services provided by the attorney in this position include a fascinating mix of client advice, administrative law matters, civil litigation, appellate practice, transactional work, and energy research. Some travel may be required. Flexible schedules and work from home arrangements may be available.

Qualifications

Applicants with experience in upstream oil and gas issues, federal land use litigation, tariffs, or corporate income taxes are highly desired. Superior writing and oral communication skills are essential. Experience handling complex discovery matters and independent management of a caseload is also desirable.
