The Trial Division of the Oregon Department of Justice is seeking applications for one permanent, full-time Senior Assistant Attorney General in its Civil Litigation Section (CLS).
CLS handles a wide variety of civil claims, including defense of agencies, officers, and employees in general tort, employment, contract, civil rights, and petitions for judicial review of agency orders. The individual selected for this position will join a team of lawyers who represent the state, its agencies, officers, and employees in civil lawsuits in state and federal trial courts.
When the 2022 Oregon Legislature passed S.B. 1584, it created a new civil cause of action against the state for wrongful conviction. In these cases, the plaintiff has the burden of proving they did not commit the crime. The caseload handled by the successful candidate for this position can be expected to include these new S.B. 1584 claims.
DOJ Trial Division has developed flexible remote working capabilities. Civil Litigation Section AAGs are able to work remotely and from the office. Everyone works at least one day per week in the office, plus additional occasions when the requirements of the job make it necessary to be in the office or in court. This position can be based out of Portland, Salem, or Eugene.
In an ongoing effort to attract and retain diverse candidates, we are hopeful you’ll share our recruitment with members of your association, organization, or section members. I am available by phone or email if you have questions.
