Press Statement by Marty Jackley, NAAG President and South Dakota Attorney General announcing his NAAG 2015-2016 Presidential Initiative
“Each National Association of Attorneys General president chooses an initiative topic on which to focus the collective attention of state and territorial attorneys general as well as dedicate the Association’s extensive resources. Today, I am pleased to announce that my NAAG presidential initiative through June 2016 will be, “To Protect & Serve with 21st Century Policing.”
“Although the role of attorneys general with respect to the investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses varies by state, attorneys general have the vital task of cooperatively enforcing our state laws and promoting sound law enforcement policies. My goal with this initiative is to offer the latest approaches, processes and possible solutions in such areas as community protection and involvement, solving and preventing crime with state-of-the art technology, mental health issues and criminal behavior, officer-involved shootings, police body-worn cameras, campus sexual assaults, domestic violence and victim services.
“We will achieve this goal by using NAAG’s resources, including conducting numerous sessions at NAAG annual meetings and legal trainings, dedicating the work of the NAAG Criminal Law Committee, and partnering on public education. Most importantly, I will be hosting the NAAG Presidential Initiative Summit, May 1 – 3, 2016, in Deadwood, S.D., committed only to action on this issue.
“To protect and serve our constituents is our duty as attorneys general and public servants. I asked my colleagues to join this initiative and welcome participation from any who are committed to improving criminal justice in this country.”
The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), www.naag.org, was founded in 1907 to help attorneys general fulfill the responsibilities of their office and to assist in the delivery of high quality legal services to the states and territorial jurisdictions.
