Deciphering Encryption: An FTC Guide
As data breaches big and small continue to make the news and require the enforcement attention of attorneys general, a common refrain points to encryption as a deterrent. But just what is encryption? How helpful is it to encrypt data to prevent the breach of sensitive information? How does someone go about encrypting information? Does it make a difference if the information is “in transit” or “at rest”? This presentation will introduce lawyers to the technical aspects of encryption, with an eye to facilitating our decision-making about whether a company should have had encryption in place or whether it should encrypt going forward.
