Chief Deputies/Chiefs of Staff Seminar Held
NAAG held its annual Chief Deputies/Chiefs of Staff Seminar May 11-13 in Annapolis, Md. A record turnout of 47 individuals from 43 jurisdictions attended. A number of panels highlighted important issues facing Attorney General offices, including Medicaid fraud settlements, pension fund legal issues, cyber-related task forces, and effective communications with constituents. A panel was also held on current ethical matters, which included a detailed discussion of how to manage evolving issues surrounding the use of social media. Additionally, updates were presented on tobacco litigation, antitrust developments, and the ongoing multistate efforts to combat mortgage fraud. During a presentation on “New and Ongoing Initiatives in Attorney General Offices”, attendees heard from host Maryland Chief Deputy Kay Winfree on innovative mentoring programs targeting underserved youth, from New Mexico Chief Deputy Al Lama on efforts to combat human trafficking, and Illinois Chief Deputy Brent Stratton on his office’s recent successes with programs to end nursing home abuses and target child pornographers.
