Kevin St. John was appointed deputy attorney general in 2011 by Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen after serving four years as the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s (DOJ) special assistant attorney general for public affairs and policy. In his current role, Kevin serves as the DOJ’s chief operating officer and has a range of responsibilities, which include overseeing all divisions within the DOJ and being involved with litigation on behalf of the state.

“Working at DOJ allows me to deal with a breadth of exciting and interesting issues that change every day but are important to the public,” he said.

Prior to his tenure in public service, Kevin practiced law with the Madison, Wis., office of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP and the Washington D.C. office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.

Kevin was recognized in February as a 2012 Leader in the Law by the Wisconsin Law Journal. He was praised for his successful arguments before the Wisconsin Supreme Court on behalf of the state in the Ozanne v. Fitzgerald case, a highly-publicized matter that was at the center of the 2011 political protests in Wisconsin.

Kevin is also active with NAAG’s National Attorneys General Training and Research Institute (NAGTRI) by serving on its Advisory Board and instructing courses. “NAGTRI provides many benefits to Attorneys General Offices to learn from one another, and better equip people for their jobs,” he said. “Attorney General Van Hollen supports my involvement with NAGTRI.”

In his leisure time, Kevin enjoys spending time with his wife and three children and can sometimes be found playing hockey and golf. He remains active in the legal community and imparts knowledge to the next generation through his involvement in the moot court competition at University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned his law degree from the University of Chicago.
