We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Attorney to join our criminal legal team. Under the general direction of the Attorney General, this position requires legal professional work in the criminal division – focused primarily on criminal prosecution. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of legal principles and practices, with a particular emphasis on courtroom litigation skills. Work in this class is performed in accordance with established rules, policies and procedures and laws; however, an employee is expected to exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the position. An employee is expected to appear before the courts on behalf of the Government of the United States Virgin Islands in criminal cases and to prepare legal documents and instruments in which the Government of the United States Virgin Islands has an interest. All work is subject to review by the Attorney General while in draft form, upon his or her request.
Responsibilities
- Appear for and represent the People of the Virgin Islands in court proceedings.
- Prosecute offenses against the laws of the Virgin Islands in the Superior Court.
- Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support case preparation.
- Draft various legal documents, briefs, motions, orders and other pleadings.
- Prepare cases for trial, including gathering evidence and preparing witnesses.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of all legal proceedings and communications.
- Collaborate with senior attorneys to develop case strategies and provide updates on progress.
- Stay informed about changes in laws and regulations that may impact clients or cases.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.
- License to practice law in the U.S. Virgin Islands – or eligible to be admitted to the V.I. bar under the special admission procedure. Admission to practice before the highest court of any state or territory. Must be in good standing.
- Professional knowledge of the principles and practice of law and the ability to apply applicable law and legal precedent to facts and draw logical conclusions.
- Ability to identify legal issues and thorough knowledge and proficiency of the application of legal research tools and case management software.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to advocate effectively.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Capable of interacting, establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with others.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, make sound decisions and present ideas and information clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines and follow-up with minimal direction.
- Experience in drafting motions, briefs, pleadings and other legal documents, as well as conducting hearings and trials in the courtroom.
