All 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, have an attorney general who serves as the chief legal officer in their jurisdiction, counsels its government agencies and legislatures, and is a representative of the public interest.
Attorneys general represent their state and its residents. They do not represent or provide legal advice to individuals.
About this section
Public Resources provides information to help you better understand the role of attorneys general and how to access assistance in your state. While the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) does not serve the public directly in resolving individual issues, this section is designed to point you to the right place.

- Learn what attorneys general do and how they serve the public

Important notice about consumer complaints
The Association does not provide assistance with individual consumer complaints and cannot intervene in disputes between consumers, businesses, or a government agency.
If you need help with a consumer issue, you should contact your state directly. Each state has a consumer protection division that reviews complaints, provides guidance, and may take action when appropriate.
There is no need to contact the Association or create an account with our organization for consumer complaint assistance. Doing so will not result in a response or resolution of your issue.
To move forward:
- Search online for your state’s “consumer protection” or “consumer complaint” office, or
- Use the Consumer Complaints directory on this site to locate your state’s official website and complaint process
Directing your concern to the appropriate state office will ensure it reaches the team best positioned to assist you.
Important: The Association cannot assist with consumer complaints. Please contact your state, territory, or district for assistance.
