The OAG is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Independent Investigations Division (IID). The IID is charged with investigating police-involved incidents that result in the death of individuals or injuries likely to result in death. If the Attorney General determines that the investigation provides sufficient grounds for prosecution, then the IID has exclusive authority to prosecute the offense.  The Senior Assistant Attorney General will join a dedicated team that includes four attorneys, one investigator, one paralegal, and one administrative professional. Together, this team is responsible for investigating, evaluating, and, when appropriate, prosecuting cases involving police-involved fatalities. In this role, the Senior Assistant Attorney General will serve as both an investigative attorney and the lead senior trial counsel on cases within the Division.

The Senior Assistant Attorney General will be responsible for complex cases involving police-involved shootings, in-custody deaths, vehicle fatalities, and use of force. The incumbent will draft and present case findings, draft and present criminal charges, and represent the State of Maryland in the handling of all stages of prosecution.

Responsibilities

The Senior Assistant Attorney General will engage with external stakeholders and partners, including the Maryland State Police.  The applicant must be comfortable with completing special projects as needed and working with diverse groups, including community groups and law enforcement. The position requires work outside of normal business hours and travel throughout the State, including participation in the IID on-call response schedule.

This position requires strong skills in criminal litigation, legal research and legal writing, with a focus on best practices, resourcefulness, sound investigative measures and senior-level prosecutorial techniques. This position requires commitment to the missions of the OAG and IID, which includes actively working to enhance transparency and strengthening public trust in the criminal justice system.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring at least seven years of high‑level criminal investigation and litigation experience, with a strong background in crime or organized crime enforcement. They will demonstrate exceptional research, writing, and oral advocacy skills, reflecting a proven ability to manage complex cases, synthesize large volumes of evidence, and present persuasive arguments in fast‑moving environments.

Special consideration will be given to candidates with significant prosecution experience, particularly those who have handled major felony matters or coordinated with multi‑agency investigative teams. Experience serving as first‑chair in a felony jury trial is preferred, as it signals courtroom leadership and strategic case management, though it is not strictly required.

Candidates must possess current or pending admission to the Maryland Bar or have the ability to immediately waive in without delay, ensuring seamless entry into active litigation.

Application Process

Applicants must submit a resume, cover letter, writing sample, and a list of three professional references, including at least one current or former supervisor.

All candidates must apply by clicking the link provided here.
