The New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ) seeks a high-performing, experienced litigation attorney to supervise all legal operations within the office. NMDOJ’s mission is to uphold the rule of law and protect vulnerable residents of New Mexico who are unable to protect themselves. The chief deputy oversees section chiefs in charge of criminal affairs, civil affairs, appeals, and impact litigation. This position reports directly to Attorney General Raúl Torrez. The ideal candidate will have ten or more years of combined experience in complex civil and criminal litigation in federal or state court and a working knowledge of criminal and civil laws enforced by NMDOJ. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to or experience with enforcing state and federal laws and familiarity with consumer protection, civil rights, constitutional law, administrative law, and criminal law. This position requires leadership skills focused on developing and fostering a collaborative atmosphere of public service and motivating supervising attorneys, line attorneys, law enforcement, and staff in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment designed to achieve meaningful results for the benefit of the public.
Responsibilities
- Supervise mid- and upper-level managers.
- Monitor federal legal and regulatory changes for their impact on New Mexicans and propose strategic litigation to protect residents and state interest.
- Devise or evaluate novel legal theories to further agency priorities; examine legal and practice risks and benefits; present conclusions and recommendations to the Attorney General and communicate the Attorney General’s priorities and decisions to supervisors within the agency.
- Represent the New Mexico Department of Justice in court and in legislative hearings, engaging in high-level advocacy to achieve favorable outcomes in the public interest.
- Work with other government agencies, advocacy groups, and stakeholders to coordinate efforts and share information.
- Negotiate settlements with large corporations to achieve meaningful injunctive relief or substantial monetary payments to redress public harms.
- Liaise with other chief deputies in attorneys general offices throughout the country in relation to matters of common interest.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the New Mexico state bar and in good standing, or the ability to acquire a limited law license until becoming a member of the New Mexico state bar.
- Ten or more years of experience in complex civil and/or criminal litigation, preferably focused on criminal prosecution, consumer protection, civil rights, constitutional law, or administrative law matters.
- Proven track record of executing successful litigation strategies and leading litigation teams.
- Familiarity with the state legislative process in New Mexico.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead internally and collaborate effectively with diverse external stakeholders.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to thrive under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equality, and public interest law.
