The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

The OAG is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as a Assistant Attorney General for the Maryland Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). The MVA is a major state agency with roughly 1,600 employees, an operating budget of about $268 million, and approximately $1.9 billion in annual revenue. The agency is responsible for licensing drivers; titling and registering vehicles; administering the Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP); and enforcing automobile insurance compliance. Its regulatory duties also encompass oversight of automobile manufacturers, distributors, dealers, salespeople, tag and title services, and driving schools.

The OAG unit at the MVA is staffed by one Deputy Principal Counsel, one Assistant Deputy Principal Counsel, three Assistant Attorneys General (one currently assigned to the Tort Litigation Unit), one Office Manager, and two Administrative Assistants.

This role offers the opportunity to provide legal guidance in a fast-paced, high-impact environment. MVA attorneys advise and represent the MVA on a wide range of matters, including, but not limited to, driver license and business license suspensions, procurements, contract disputes, commercial transactions, personnel actions, and civil claims.

The Assistant Attorney General will represent the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) in state and federal courts and before the Office of Administrative Hearings. This position is responsible for litigating judicial reviews involving suspensions, revocations, and denials of driver and business licenses or applications; defending personnel actions; and handling a broad range of civil litigation matters affecting the MVA. The Assistant Attorney General also provides comprehensive legal advice on issues related to driver licensing, vehicle registration, business and occupational licensing, employment and labor matters, procurement, Public Information Act compliance, legislative review, regulatory development, and consumer-related matters. This role ensures that the MVA’s decisions and operations remain legally sound and consistent with applicable statutes, regulations, and policies.
