The National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) is pleased to present this free 3-day virtual training exclusively for the NAAG community. Attorney general office investigators working cases involving virtual currencies will be given preference. Assistant attorneys general qualify as registrants as well.

TRAINING DETAILS

This course provides students with the fundamental knowledge and skills they need to investigate crimes involving virtual currency. Instructors explain foundational concepts like the characteristics of money, virtual currency, and cryptocurrency. Blockchain technology, proof of work, and proof of stake are covered, and students learn how industry-leading cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin®, Ethereum®, and Monero) work and how they differ from each other. Finally, students learn investigative techniques for tracking and documenting transactions, and best practices for seizing and securing cryptocurrency. Hands-on exercises include opening a bitcoin wallet, bitcoin transactions, investigating the blockchain, and identifying services using free/open-source explorers.

NW3C CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Students who complete this course are eligible for 1.0 point toward the 3CE and 3CI certifications. To receive a certificate upon completion of this course, the following must be completed:

  • 100% attendance
  • Complete all in-class exercises
  • Score of 80% or above on post-test

Scholarship Nominations – Opens June 15

Nominations are due June 26, 2026

NAAG will provide a limited number of scholarships to selected participants. Offices are not guaranteed a slot, though every effort is made to accept nominees from as many offices as possible.

Due to virtual computer lab constraints, capacity is limited to 36 seats, and acceptance will be determined on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Member office nominators are encouraged to submit up to two nominees, listing their preferred candidate first. Scholarships will be awarded to the first‑listed nominee as space allows. If additional space becomes available, alternate nominees may also be offered a scholarship.
