Washington, D.C. — District of Columbia Attorney General Karl A. Racine was elected president of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) at its Capital Forum, Dec. 2-3. During the event, General Racine announced his Presidential Initiative “The People v. Hate: Standing Up for Humanity.”
The initiative commenced on Dec. 3 with a keynote address from Christian Picciolini, a speaker, author, peace advocate, and former violent extremist. Attorney General Racine also provided remarks on his initiative.
“Thank you to my fellow Attorneys General across the country for providing me the opportunity to lead NAAG as its next President. This honor is testament to the Office of the Attorney General’s talented team and their tireless work fighting for justice and equality, standing up for the rule of law, and protecting District residents,” said District of Columbia Attorney General and NAAG President Karl A. Racine. “In 2021, I look forward to working with Attorneys General and their staff to focus our collective efforts on analyzing and addressing the scourge of hate in America. From the genocide of Native Americans, slavery, systematic racism, anti-Semitism, and discrimination of all forms, I can think of no better group than Attorneys General—the people’s lawyers—to combat the dehumanization and debasement of people that forms the basis for hate and bias-motivated violence.”
“As public advocates, attorneys general have a crucial role in defending their communities against hate,” said NAAG Executive Director Chris Toth. “General Racine’s presidential initiative will further NAAG’s efforts to promote the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and insights among America’s attorneys general and to support their work protecting the people.”
Attorney General Racine, whose term will run through December 2021, succeeds Montana Attorney General Tim Fox as NAAG president.
“We’re grateful for General Fox’s leadership of the Association during this challenging year,” continued Toth. “He led NAAG with dignity and we were all made better by his presidential initiative focused on Transformational Leadership and Civility.”
