The Bob Keppel Criminal Justice Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office has an exciting and rewarding opportunity in its downtown Seattle or Spokane office for an attorney interested in investigating and prosecuting financial crimes! CRJ prosecutes all manner of crime such as homicide cases in smaller counties, sexual assault cases, child predatory cases, public corruption and police accountability cases, and white-collar crimes such as tax fraud, general fraud, organized retail crime and wage theft. The Financial Crimes Team’s focus is to investigate and prosecute a wide variety of financial cases including wage theft, tax fraud, identify theft, complex fraud, elder fraud and crimes committed by government employees and public officials. We seek an attorney with significant litigation experience to combat fraud in Washington.
Responsibilities
The selected candidate will work closely with senior AGO investigators, as well as state agencies and state, local, and federal law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute financial crimes. While the primary focus of this position is prosecuting financial crimes, the selected candidate should be proficient in prosecuting a full range of crimes.
The Attorney General’s Office receives criminal referrals from any of Washington’s 39 county prosecuting attorneys or the governor. The selected candidate will work in downtown Seattle or Spokane, but travel around the state for court hearings, investigations and trial preparation as necessary.
Qualifications
In addition to meeting the qualifications to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, preferred candidates will also possess:
- At least three years of criminal trial experience;
- Exceptional legal research, writing and oral advocacy skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills that promote a collegial, inclusive and respectful workplace;
- Demonstrated good judgment when exercising discretion in criminal cases;
- The ability to work independently and in a variety of settings;
- Commitment to public service and justice for victims of crime; and
- Admission to practice law in Washington state courts.
The selected candidate is proficient in:
- Handling all phases of criminal prosecution from investigation to trial;
- Negotiating plea agreements under Washington’s sentencing guidelines;
- Drafting pleadings and other written communications to courts, opposing counsel, law enforcement and others; and
- Representing the State in appellate matters before the Court of Appeals and Washington Supreme Court.
