Within the Office of the Attorney General, the Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse (DMFEA) works to investigate and prosecute fraud against the Medi-Cal program and abuse and neglect within California’s long-term care facilities. Within DMFEA, the Facilities Enforcement Team (FET) Criminal Team plays a unique and critically important role in ensuring the safety and care of elderly and dependent persons residing in nursing homes and other facilities by investigating and prosecuting allegations of abuse and neglect.

Typical duties of the FET Criminal Team Deputy Attorney General include:

• Working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team of attorneys, special agents, nurses, auditors, and legal staff to investigate abuse and neglect referrals and complaints.

• Advising on the development of investigative plans, including reviewing warrants and interview strategy, and working with expert witnesses under a vertical prosecution model.

• Evaluating evidence and potential theories of culpability for a filing decision.

• Prosecuting criminal elder abuse cases in state court at all stages of litigation, including charging, motion work, settlement or jury trial, and sentencing.

• Assist with unannounced inspections of nursing home facilities as part of the Operation SAFE program.

• Participate in training and public/law enforcement outreach.
