Responsibilities
Position Summary
Under general supervision of the Division of Legal Services Director, this position serves as Senior Counsel for criminal and habeas law. This position works in close consultation with Division of Legal Services administration and works with the Criminal Appeals Unit Director. The position collaborates with executive staff on Department of Justice goals for the development of the law, providing high-level legal advice to internal and external stakeholders. The position leads and supports criminal and habeas law development, particularly on significant legal issues. The position oversees the planning and review of briefing in specified, significant trial and appellate matters as well as in all criminal and habeas cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and Wisconsin Supreme Court.
The position requires a sophisticated understanding of legal principles and strategies with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. The position requires having an institutional view of the place of an individual case or appeal in the Department’s long-term interests. The position requires developing and maintaining effective working relationships with executive staff, division leadership, and agency partners. This position requires collaboration, including on criminal and habeas law training and resources.
Salary Information
The Senior Counsel (Assistant Attorney General) position is in pay schedule 09 and pay range 75. The starting pay will be between $114940 – $136780 annually. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.
Job Details
This position may be eligible to work remotely up to 40% as part of a hybrid schedule, following an initial training period. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement.
High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.
Occasional in-state travel will be required. Must be eligible to drive when required for travel.
The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.
A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.
Candidate must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin State Bar upon appointment.

- Training or teaching criminal law attorneys;
- Advising high-level management on legal issues;
- Law creation through work on legislation, workgroups, councils, etc.;
- Law development in appellate law practice.
