Case Description
The U.S. and the States sought to enjoin Loews Theatres and Cineplex Odeon Corporation (Cineplex) from entering into a merger which, they alleged would substantially reduce competition among first screening movie theaters. Loews and Cineplex agreed to settlement terms with the States in which they agreed to divest the Manhattan theater assets and the Chicago theater assets. These assets consisted of 24 cinemas in New York and Chicago. In exchange, the merger was consummated, forming LoewsCineplex. The Department of Justice led the investigation.
