Peter Neronha is a descendent on his father’s side of a Portuguese fisherman who came to this country from the Azores in the late 1800s and settled in amestown. His mother is the youngest child of German farmers, who came to this country as a young woman in the late 1950s. His parents raised their three children in Jamestown, and though they never attended themselves, they worked hard to send all of them to college, and two of them to law

Peter went to North Kingstown High School and graduated with the class of 1981. He then went to Boston College, graduating in summa cum laude in 1985, and went on to Boston College Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review. After graduation, he joined the Boston law firm, Goodwin Procter. While living in Boston, he met his wife Shelly, an M.I.T. and Stanford Medical School graduate then doing her residency in internal medicine.

In 1996, Peter joined the attorney general’s office where he served as a special assistant and assistant attorney general from 1996 to 2002. He was an assistant United States attorney from 2002 to 2009, and after being recommended for appointment by Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, he was appointed by President Obama as United States attorney for Rhode Island in 2009, serving until 2017. As U.S. attorney, Peter aggressively fought public corruption, brought major cases against cartel-linked drung trafficking organizations and dramatically increased the number child sex trafficking prosecutions.

Peter and Shelly live in Jamestown, where Shelly is in a small primary care practice in South County. They have two sons, Zach and Josh. Zach is now in college, and Josh goes to North Kingstown High School.
