State and Territory Attorney General 2020 Elections

The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) offers nonpartisan 2019 election information about the races for attorney general in the states and territories. There are 2 open seats – meaning a new attorney general will be elected in those states.

In addition to the elections, some attorneys general are appointed by the governor, chosen by the state legislature (Maine) or selected by the state Supreme Court (Tennessee). Two attorneys general are running for governor. The map and the information chart below offers links to official state election websites, candidates and candidate campaign sites.

    The governor appoints the attorney general of American Samoa. Incumbent Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga is term-limited and cannot run again.

    Maine's attorney general is appointed by the state Legislature for a two-year term.
Missouri August 4 Incumbent Attorney General Eric Schmitt is running for election. He was appointed to the position in 2019 by Missouri Governor Mike Parson.
Montana June 2 Incumbent Attorney General Tim Fox is term limited. He is running for governor.
New Hampshire       The governor appoints the attorney general of New Hampshire. Incumbent Governor Chris Sununu is running for re-election.
North Carolina March 3 Incumbent Attorney General Josh Stein is running for re-election.
Oregon May 19   Incumbent Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum is running for re-election.
Pennsylvania April 28 Incumbent Attorney General Josh Shapiro is running for re-election. 
Puerto Rico       The governor appoints the secretary of justice of Puerto Rico. Incumbent Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced was appointed to the position and is running for election.
Utah  June 30   Incumbent Attorney General Sean Reyes is running for re-election.
Vermont August 11   Incumbent Attorney General TJ Donovan is running for re-election.
Washington August 4 Incumbent Attorney General Bob Ferguson is running for re-election.
West Virginia May 12 Incumbent Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is running for re-election.
