The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) sent a letter, signed by 44 attorneys general, to TikTok and Snapchat urging them to give parents the ability to monitor their children’s social media usage and protect their children from online threats using parental control apps.

In their letter, the attorneys general express various concerns over the social media platforms, including:

  • TikTok and Snapchat do not effectively collaborate with parental control applications (“apps”) or otherwise provide an adequate opportunity for parental control within the platform.
  • Research increasingly demonstrates the negative impact that social media can have on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of children and teenagers.
  • Content depicting abusive sexual relationships can seriously harm a child’s view of a healthy relationship and can help perpetuate domestic abuse and human trafficking.
