Members of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) voted on the organization’s 2023 Executive Committee last week during its annual Capital Forum. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost was elected as president of NAAG for 2023.

Attorney General Yost, a Republican, was first elected as Ohio attorney general in 2018 and was re-elected to a second four-year term in 2022. Prior to being elected as NAAG President, AG Yost previously served as NAAG’s Midwestern Region Chair.

“The trust of my colleagues is both gratifying and sobering,” said General Yost during his opening remarks at Capital Forum. “This is a difficult time for our country, and no less for our institutions. I pledge to lead with humility and courage.”

During his remarks, General Yost noted that NAAG serves an important purpose. “It is to give those of us who uphold the rule of law in each of our states and territories the opportunity to learn from each other,” General Yost said. “It is to allow us to join our resources to better serve the voters we answer to. It is to help each of us do a better job of ensuring that all the people of the states and territories we serve are afforded equal justice on a level playing field.”

Attorney General Yost was elected as NAAG President following a vote on reforms to the organization’s constitution. Those reforms include electing a president from alternate political parties each year and organizing committee appointments to ensure bipartisan representation. In light of these constitutional reforms, Josh Stein, the Democratic Attorney General of North Carolina, stepped down from the position of president-elect to allow a Republican to serve as the 2023 President. Former President Tom Miller, Attorney General of Iowa, was a Democrat.

Attorney General Josh Stein will take Attorney General Miller’s place on the NAAG executive committee as Past President.

During its annual Capital Forum, NAAG’s members also voted on their 2023 executive officers. The full slate of NAAG officers elected are:

  • President – Dave Yost, Ohio Attorney General
  • President-Elect – Ellen F. Rosenblum, Oregon Attorney General
  • Vice President – John Formella, New Hampshire Attorney General
  • Immediate Past President – Josh Stein, North Carolina Attorney General

Additionally, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, who serves as the Chair of the Finance Committee, will also sit on the Executive Committee.

More information about NAAG’s Executive Committee and Constitution can be found at naag.org.
