Washington, D.C. — The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) announced the publication of a new edition of “State Attorneys General Powers and Responsibilities,” the most authoritative and complete source for information about state attorney general offices. Now in its fourth edition, the book is the only publication that fully explores the unique office of state attorney general, including its many responsibilities, its authority and its relationship with other parts of state government. It also discusses the many areas in which attorneys general work together on a multistate basis to address nationwide problems.

Attorneys general, as chief legal officer for their states, affect nearly every aspect of life in the United States. State attorneys general keep intrusive and unwanted telemarketers away; protect consumers against fraud and abuse; ensure a fair and competitive marketplace; defend state laws against court challenges; defend criminal convictions on appeal; and serve as stewards of the environment and public lands.

The book is one of the many publications of NAAG’s research and training arm, the National Attorneys General Training and Research Institute (NAGTRI). NAGTRI’s Chief Editor and Powers & Duties Chief Counsel Emily Myers served as editor for the book, with chapters written by a group of expert contributors.
“The role of the attorney general is multifaceted. As with our prior editions, this book provides the community with resources to understand the scope of the role in light of the most recent legal developments across the country,” said NAGTRI Director Amy Tenney Curren.
