The Child Protection section is recruiting for a full-time attorney to handle child-in-need-of-aid cases.

This caseload is primarily based in Bethel, and there is a strong preference for candidates who can be stationed there. However, the position may also be available to an Anchorage-based attorney. The role will involve regular travel to Bethel for court appearances.

Flexible schedules and work from home arrangements may be available. Attorneys in the Civil Division work on matters of statewide importance, all while living and enjoying all Alaska has to offer. If you enjoy complex and impactful legal work along with dramatic scenery, outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, kayaking, and abundant wildlife, then the Alaska Department of Law, Civil Division is the place for you.

Responsibilities

The caseload is heavy and focused on litigation. The attorney may also have the opportunity to work on child welfare policy and participate in special projects aimed at improving the child welfare system in Alaska.

Qualifications

Two years of trial experience and experience in child abuse or neglect law is highly desired, and all applicants at any experience level will be considered. Candidates must have or be able to demonstrate the ability to develop strong critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and time management skills. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate effective and appropriate consensus building and a willingness to be flexible. These positions require an attorney who is a creative thinker, able to reason and make decisions quickly, and able to work well independently under pressure. The successful candidate should be committed to the child welfare field and able to work with a variety of people, including the client agency, the public, and witnesses.
