Washington, D.C. – June 10, 2026 — Today, the National Association of Attorneys General sent a letter on behalf of a bipartisan coalition of 40 state and territory attorneys general to congressional leaders. The letter expresses bipartisan support for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), and requests continued funding in the Fiscal Year 2027 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. The attorneys general highlight the importance of maintaining access to civil legal services for individuals facing economic barriers to legal representation.
The letter notes that LSC operates through a nationwide network of independent legal aid organizations that provide civil legal assistance across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. These programs address significant civil legal needs faced by individuals and families and support access to justice in communities across the country.
The attorneys general describe how LSC-supported services assist individuals in matters involving veterans’ benefits, disaster recovery, domestic violence, and protections for seniors, as well as access challenges in rural communities. The letter underscores the role of these programs in helping individuals navigate civil legal issues and maintaining access to legal assistance in underserved areas.
The letter was led by the attorneys general of Colorado, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee and joined by the attorneys general of Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Northern Mariana Islands, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
