An amicus curiae, or “friend of the court,” is an individual or group who is not party to a legal action but may submit an amicus brief to the court to offer the court their views on the case. Attorneys general often submit amicus briefs in a wide range of cases where they have an interest in the outcome, especially when the result of the case could impact their own jurisdiction.
