Salary commensurate with experience; expected hiring range $88,000 – $120,000/year
The Office of the Kansas Attorney General’s Civil Division operates as a general-service law firm for the State of Kansas and agencies. We provide legal advice as general counsel to agencies across State government, we represent State agencies, institutions of higher education, and employees sued in state and federal court for personal injuries, property damage, employment discrimination, and more.

Responsibilities
The Civil Division houses attorneys in three sections: Defensive Litigation, Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE), and Legal Oversight & Government Counsel (LOGiC). Position are currently available in Defensive Litigation and Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) sections.
Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE): This section litigates cases where the State will appear as the plaintiff, affirmatively asserting and protecting State interests. This practice involves a wide range of plaintiff-oriented cases such as false claims, breach of contract, illegal annexations, enforcement actions on behalf of the State of Kansas, representing state agencies in administrative disciplinary/licensing matters, ensuring Kansas’ compliance with the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA), and pursuing judgments on behalf of the state. The Assistant Attorney General will litigate cases with a team with other attorneys, one special agent, and administrative support professionals.
Defensive Litigation: Attorneys in this section defend the State of Kansas and its agencies in all manner of defensive litigation: torts, employment suits, prisoner litigation, wrongful conviction claims, contract disputes, civil rights claims, appeals from administrative decisions, and a host of other civil claims. They handle cases all the way through motions practice, discovery, settlement negotiations, and trial as necessary.
Duties:
Drafting/arguing pleadings and motions; investigating potential cases; interviewing clients and witnesses; legal research and writing; conducting depositions; conducting negotiations; participating in administrative hearings; district court trial advocacy; researching, interpreting, and applying statutes, court decisions, or other legal authority on points of law; and overseeing personal case management.

Travel: Infrequent to occasional travel both within and outside the state of Kansas for meetings, depositions, hearings, trials, training, and other investigation- and litigation-related duties will be required.
Qualifications
Licensing & Certification
- Certificate of admission and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas or eligible for admission on waiver (or Kansas Supreme Court Rules for Attorney Admissions – Rule 715)
- A valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience or demonstrated interest in the Civil Division’s mission/work
