he Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (“OAG”) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisor and representative of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking an energetic, collegial, and highly skilled attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG). The selected candidate will primarily represent and provide legal counsel to the Police Training and Standards Commission and the Correctional Training Commission.
The Police Training and Standards Commission is independent of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services but operates within its overall structure. The Commission oversees matters such as granting and revoking police officer certifications, developing and reviewing training standards, and providing guidance to local jurisdictions on issues including the Police Accountability Act. The Correctional Training Commission, which operates under the authority of the Secretary of Public Safety and Correctional Services, establishes training standards and curriculum for correctional officers, inspects training centers, determines whether officers meet certification requirements, and collaborates with other government agencies and educational institutions to support correctional education.
Responsibilities
The AAG will advise both commissions and work closely with them to continually update and refine training and certification requirements for correctional and police officers. The attorney will also handle litigation involving the commissions, including responding to subpoenas and Maryland Public Information Act requests.
In addition, the attorney will assist the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services with litigation and other legal matters, which may include conducting legal research, drafting memoranda, and providing general litigation support.
This unit within the OAG consists of 17 attorneys and 5 professional staff and offers a dynamic and supportive working environment. The AAG assigned to the commissions will be based at the Public Safety Education and Training Center and will not be located in the same office as the OAG unit that represents Public Safety.
