The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. The OAG is seeking a talented and motivated attorney to join its legal team at the Maryland Department of Labor (DOL) as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG). This is an exceptional opportunity to make a real difference by enforcing Maryland’s wage and workplace laws and protecting workers across the State. The Department of Labor is a dynamic agency with multiple divisions, including Unemployment Insurance, Labor and Industry, Workforce Development and Adult Learning, Financial Regulation, Occupational and Professional Licensing, and the Racing Commission. The OAG provides comprehensive legal counsel and litigation support to all divisions, as well as to the Secretary and administrative units, on enforcement actions, disciplinary matters, defense litigation, and legislative and regulatory initiatives.
Responsibilities
As a litigator for the Department of Labor and Industry, the AAG will play a critical role in promoting fair labor practices and ensuring compliance with Maryland law. This position involves representing the DOL in contested cases before the Office of Administrative Hearings, regulatory agencies, and in district, circuit, and appellate courts. Key responsibilities include litigating wage claims referred by the Employment Standards Service and Workplace Fraud Unit, researching and advising on issues under Maryland’s wage laws (Md. Code Ann., Labor & Employment Article, Title 3), and managing administrative enforcement actions under the Wage Payment and Collection Law and the Workplace Fraud Act. The AAG will be joining a dedicated team of 31 led by the Principal Counsel, two Deputy Principal Counsels, and three Supervising Senior Counsel. This role offers the opportunity to develop deep expertise in labor and employment law, engage in impactful litigation, and collaborate with experienced attorneys on complex legal issues.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring at least five years of legal experience, demonstrating exceptional litigation and writing skills, and must be admitted to the Maryland Bar or eligible to waive in. A solid background in labor and employment law is essential, with proven ability to handle complex cases and provide strategic legal counsel.
