The new Center is devoted to strengthening individual and collective leadership among state attorneys general.
The NAAG Center for Excellence in Governance is devoted to strengthening individual and collective leadership among state attorneys general by establishing platforms to study and discuss the responsibilities of public leadership and service. The Center will enhance civil, bipartisan dialogue and engagement among state attorneys general, help them respond to the challenges inherent in elected office, and facilitate the exercise of thoughtful and committed leadership in contemporary context.
In its first two years, the Center will launch the following programs to serve the attorney general community:
International Leadership Institute
The Center will organize an annual five-day leadership institute in London, England for six state attorneys general representing different political parties. The institute will provide a safe, confidential environment for state attorneys general to reexamine the foundational values and principles of our western democratic tradition, grapple with vexing questions and current issues, speak candidly about the daily realities of their office, build relationships, and discuss political differences and how to overcome those in service to our nation.
Leadership Institute for Chief Deputy Attorneys General
The Center will host an annual educational event for small groups of chief deputy attorneys general representing different political parties. The institute will provide a curriculum and faculty designed for chief deputy attorneys general to work with their peers to gain a greater understanding of the aspirational principles of the western democratic tradition and a reexamination of those ethical and moral principles in light of the civility deficit in our present national political discourse.
Peer-to-Peer Exchange Program
The Center will establish an annual peer-to-peer exchange program for attorneys general and key AGO staff from different political parties. The exchange program will foster relationships in a collaborative learning environment to encourage teamwork, cooperation, and combined effort and resources.
