A bipartisan coalition of 36 state attorneys general has sent a letter to Congress opposing a proposed federal ban on state laws regulating artificial intelligence (AI). The attorneys general emphasize that while AI offers transformative benefits, it also poses serious risks—such as scams, deepfakes, and harmful interactions—especially for vulnerable groups like children and seniors. States have already enacted targeted laws to address these challenges and believe local innovation is essential for effective protection.
The coalition urges Congress not to impose a blanket moratorium that would prevent states from responding to rapidly evolving AI threats. Instead, they call for federal-state collaboration to develop thoughtful regulations that safeguard the public while supporting technological progress.
