Civil Enforcement Division – Antitrust, False Claims & Privacy

The Civil Enforcement Division of the Oregon Department of Justice is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and experienced attorney with a strong interest or background in privacy and cybersecurity to join the privacy unit in our Antitrust, False Claims, & Privacy Section. The primary role for this attorney will be to help implement and enforce the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act, as well as other data breach and cybersecurity laws. The work often involves cutting edge issues of privacy law and policy across an array of traditional and emerging industries.

Working alone or in teams, this attorney will apply their skills and experience to identify, investigate and prosecute complex matters related to data privacy and security.  Duties will include issuing investigative demands, taking sworn witness interviews, and working with consulting experts and analysts to evaluate legal and strategic issues. When warranted, this attorney will seek consumer restitution, penalties, and injunctive relief through a negotiated settlement or, if necessary, through litigation. The attorney in this position may also participate in or lead national efforts focused on cybersecurity, data protection, and privacy issues. In addition, this attorney may be tasked with assisting on other Section matters as needed.

Questions regarding this position may be directed to Tim Smith, Attorney-in-Charge, Antitrust, False Claims, & Privacy Section, Civil Enforcement Division, at 503.798.3297 or tim.smith@doj.oregon.gov.

In an ongoing effort to attract and retain diverse candidates, we are hopeful you’ll share our recruitment with members of your association, organization, or section members.  I am available by phone or email if you have questions.
