Responsibilities
The core responsibilities include:
- giving advice on child protection statutes and regulations
- instituting court actions when children must be removed from abusive or neglectful homes or when court oversight is required
- working closely with the Department on legal decision-making during the life of the case filing petitions, when necessary, to terminate parental rights so that safe, permanent homes for children can be found if reunification is not possible.
Qualifications
Two years of trial experience and experience in child abuse or neglect law is highly desired, and all applicants at any experience level will be considered. Candidates must have or be able to demonstrate the ability to develop strong critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and time management skills. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate effective and appropriate consensus building and a willingness to be flexible. These positions require an attorney who is a creative thinker, able to reason and make decisions quickly, and able to work well independently under pressure. The successful candidate should be committed to the child welfare field and able to work with a variety of people, including the client agency, the public, and witnesses.
